A tragic murder has taken place in Siddheshwarpur village under Rahimpur Union of Kamalganj upazila, Moulvibazar. Out of long-standing family disputes and resentment, a younger brother, Ranna (alias, 16), hacked his elder brother, Abdur Rahim Rafi (26), to death while he was asleep. Police have arrested the accused teenager and recovered the murder weapon—a machete—and a blood-stained lungi used during the killing.
On the morning of August 9, Rafi’s throat-slit body was found inside his home. Upon receiving the news, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime & Ops) Nobel Chakma, Srimangal Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Anisur Rahman, and Kamalganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Afr Md. Mahfuzul Kabir visited the scene. Based on suspicious behavior and gathered information, police detained Ranna the same day for questioning, during which he confessed to the killing.
According to his statement, on the night of August 8, around 8:00 PM, he had asked his elder brother for 500 taka. Rafi refused, verbally abused him, and behaved rudely. Enraged, the next morning around 7:00 AM, taking advantage of the absence of their mother and sister-in-law, and finding Rafi asleep with the room’s doors open, Ranna retrieved a sharp machete from under the bed and struck his brother repeatedly on the neck, killing him instantly. He then washed the machete, placed it back under the bed along with his blood-stained lungi, and went about his day as if nothing had happened.
Police stated that the killing was not only over the money dispute. There had been ongoing family tensions. After their father’s death, Rafi took responsibility for his younger brother and wanted him to stay in a madrasa for studies. However, Ranna was indifferent to education and stayed home most of the time, leading to frequent scolding from Rafi. Additionally, Rafi had married for love against the family’s wishes, which caused further friction between his wife, mother, and younger brother. The relationship never normalized, and disputes between the sister-in-law and younger brother were frequent. Over time, these issues deepened Ranna’s resentment toward his elder brother, eventually erupting in murder.
Rafi’s mother, Monowara Begum, has filed a murder case (Case No. 05, Date: 10/08/2025, Sections 302/34 of the Penal Code) at Kamalganj Police Station. Police said the investigation is ongoing and the accused will be produced before the court.
